Many riders have told me that they did not know that when the driver arrives to pick the rider up, Uber does not provide the destination to the driver until after the driver has arrived to pick up the passenger and accepted the ride, and the the driver has swiped to start the ride. Then and only then does Uber tell the driver where he/she will be going and how far it is. The poor driver who is an independent contractor, is not given the destination beforehand. This is why, sometimes, drivers have to cancel the ride. Sometimes the distance is too far away and the driver is not compensated for that ride fairly. The driver often ends up giving someone a free ride at his/her expense, and often the driver cannot afford to drive too far away, especially when gas prices are rising and car maintenance is also an added expense. Meanwhile, Uber takes all the profits. This practice is unfair to the driver and to the rider, as well.

To Tip or Not To Tip Drivers
Many riders do not realize that the drivers are providing a service as an independent contractor for Uber and Lyft. While Uber and Lyft do deserve a fee, they often take 50-65% of the fare for corporate and pass on the remainder to the driver. The driver does not get reimbursed for the gas and maintenance of the vehicle. They also do not get reimbursed for the wear and tear on their own vehicle. Here is something to consider: drivers are providing a service, just as a waiter/waitress does in a restaurant or venue. Would you not tip the waiter for their work, and excellent service? Its' common courtesy to tip because it shows that you appreciate good service, or you would have taken the bus home instead. It is something to think about when someone is providing a service to you. Show some appreciation by tipping and we will be able to retain good drivers.
